Interior Design Consistency

Working with Area46Furniture gives you the unique opportunity to create something called “consistency of design“. This is a design concept that allows you to carry a theme throughout a distinct area, room, or an entire structure.  It could be that all the furniture in the same space/ room has those distinctive “hairpin legs” that signal “mid-century”. Or, that a bedroom have all of its cabinets made out of white oak. Similarly, commercial spaces regularly set different tones and colors as recognizable themes, almost as color icons (think Starbucks, or Target stores).

The initial idea was to design and build a dresser/ general storage cabinet. The concept was to design a furniture piece with wide rectangular drawers that would augment a mid-century modern themed home, and would appear to float in the space.

This was accomplished with a top that appears to float above the main cabinet, and hairpin legs that keep the entire piece “light on its’ feet”.

Removing the bottom drawers, and allowing for taller legs, a console/ sofa table is realized, in the same tradition of the original design. This piece can set at the back of a couch or utilized in an entry hall as a console table.

Retaining the original design concept with minimal design changes can give the user the consistency of design throughout the entire house.

Maple or White Oak are being considered for the material. The pulls for all of the drawers will be hand made out of the same material, and the only metal to be used is for the iconic legs. To raise the top, so as to give it a floating look, a 3/4″ dark Rosewood lip will be added to the underside.
