. . . from writing desk, to console table

While roaming the streets on the outskirts of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, I came across a small shop with various articles for home interiors. This writing desk (lower right) struck my eye with its clean implementation of the mid-century style.
Two years later, while searching my images, I rediscovered the writing desk. I started thinking this would be a good basis for a console table, or "side boy" (as they used to be called).
The original concept was to make this table out of plywood, since this was a material that was used extensively in the 40's and 50's.
Plywood panels form the "legs" with a metal hidden bracket added for stability. The panels were covered with variable widths and thicknesses of hard white maple.
Hard white maple was chosen for the top because of its' mass, and durability as an eating surface.

The purpose of this project was two fold. First it looked at the concept of designing an industrial piece, whose design could be slightly modified for use inside a mid-century home. The thinking was to work out the idea of a chest, that could also be used as a dresser, aka, chest of drawers.
The second was to build it using a variety of materials. Drawer boxes are made of birch faced plywood. The carcus used traditional joinery (mortise and tenon) on inexpensive medium density fiberboard. Top is laminated maple.
